A student recently completed a Grade 1 Music Theory practice paper.
75 marks available. 72 earned.
96%. Impressive.
But as someone interested in both music and psychology, I find something else interesting.
What does a test actually measure?
A test doesn’t tell us everything about a learner. It gives us a snapshot of performance under particular conditions. The interesting part is interpreting that snapshot. A 96% might suggest strong understanding of the material covered. The three incorrect answers might reveal areas that need reinforcement.
And the fact that this was the student’s first theory exam gives us another piece of information: experience with the examination format itself is still developing.
That’s why assessment shouldn’t simply be about:
“What did you get?”
It should also ask:
“What does this result tell us?”
And perhaps even more importantly:
“What should we do next?”
